Stock Charts

There are many varieties of charts available for those using technical analysis to determine which stocks to buy and sell. The type of chart used often depends on the preference of the trader themselves, as well as the strategy they will be using to find information that might lead to a stock market transaction.

The most commonly used charts are:

  • Line charts, which connects the closing price of the stock from each time period, and are most useful for traders who place the most emphasis on the closing price;
  • Open-high-low-close or a bar chart, which provides the opening price, the closing price, the high price and the low price for each designated time period;
  • Candlesticks, which provides the opening price, the closing price, the high price and the low price for each designated time period.

Other less-common stock chart formats include Bollinger Bars, mountains, point-and-figure, kagi, renko, pie, bar and columns.

Traders tend to gravitate toward the chart that best meets their needs. For example, a buy-and-hold trader would be happy to use a line chart, while a buy-and-sell trader requires more in-depth information and could most likely use a Candlestick chart. It might be a good idea to experiment with a variety of charts before sticking with one, making sure to paper trade for a proper amount of time before striking out for a funded trade.
